This song is in the usual open D tuning, with the exception of the
high string, which is tuned normally to E. I'm not completely sure
if this is exactly how Mike Gurley played the song, but it's the
only way I was able to find that allowed all the notes in the
chords to ring out together like they do on the record. I decided
to tab this song all the way from beginning to end. The lyrics are
right under the tab. There are only a few different fingerings and
progressions. None of them are particularly difficult, though the
picking pattern might take a bit of getting used to. There are
actually two guitars playing on this tune. The first one is what
you'll see as the main tab part below. The second guitar mostly
adds high arpeggios to the riffs. I have not tabbed out this
second guitar, but if you look all the way at the bottom of this
page, you'll see I have supplied a couple of examples. I've taken
two of the main riffs that appear in the song and shown what the
second guitar plays. Using those examples, you should be able to
come up with arrangements for the rest of the song. If you have a
buddy, you're all set. Otherwise, it is possible to arrange the
parts for one guitar, but the difficulty of pulling it off is much
higher. As always, the tab I've shown below can be taken literally,
but I recommend mixing it up with some different picking patterns
and improvisation. Good luck!
